Have you ever wanted to live like royalty—perhaps Marie-Antoinette or Louis XVI—but without leaving the comfy environs of the American Midwest? Now you can. A 9,265-square-foot Wisconsin mansion inspired by the Palace of Versailles is headed to auction on October 28, after having been on the market for a year, listed at $4.93 million.

The 106-acre property in Mukwonago—a wig’s throw from Milwaukee—is known as Greenwald Manor. Never mind that it sits about 4,000 miles from the actual gilded compound, one of the most visited sites in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. The suburban chateau is popular in these parts.

In keeping with Versailles, as you enter you’re greeted by ornate fresco ceilings that lead you to an opulent foyer with a grand piano and crystal chandelier. Windows spanning four levels provide an abundance of natural light.

Each of the three bedrooms offers a regal decor, such as a ceiling embossed with family photos, perhaps in homage to Marie-Antoinette’s private boudoir at Versailles, where the queen would play with her children and received friends.

The property is surrounded by manicured lawns and hedges, much like the gardens of Versailles, complete with statuary, fountains, and a gazebo. Other amenities include a gilded elevator and an “eagle’s nest” at the top of the home that overlooks the grounds.

On October 28, Greenwald Manor will be sold to the highest bidder, without reserve, meaning there is no minimum price. All proceeds will go toward the Greenwald Family Foundation, a charitable organization that supports arts and culture in the community, such as the high school’s performing arts center, which is named after the foundation.
