Volta is returning to New York—at a brand new location. This year, the fair takes place at 548 West 22nd Street, the former Dia building in Chelsea, which also temporarily housed gallery Hauser & Wirth.  The fair coincides with Frieze New York, which will be held just a few blocks away at the Shed in Hudson Yards. 

This edition also marks a new chapter for Volta, since the fair—which originally launched in Switzerland in 2005—was purchased by the London-based organizer Ramsay Fairs in 2019. (Volta Basel will follow the New York edition, taking place June 13–19, 2022, concurrent with Art Basel.) With an international mix of 49 galleries exhibiting, Volta New York aims to be the go-to event for considered curation and creative discovery.

“We put so much hard work and effort into Volta over the past two years. We’ve re-strategized and re-positioned, traveling to cities like Copenhagen, Vienna, Madrid, Budapest, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Mexico, New York, and Miami to cultivate new exhibitors, fresh talent, and wider constituencies,” said Kamiar Maleki, the fair’s director. “We’ve truly pushed the limits of what the past months made possible.”

Nearly 20 galleries will be making their debuts at the fair. Among this year’s highlights is the introduction of the first-ever Volta Spotlight Prize for NFTs, presented in collaboration with Artsted, which provides a $2,500 grant to an artist presenting a piece of crypto art.

Volta New York takes place from Wednesday, May 18 to Sunday, May 22, 2022.
