From the start of the Venice Biennale earlier this month, Lombard Odier and Carpenters Workshop Gallery’s exhibition, “DYSFUNCTIONAL”, has drawn crowds of art and design lovers from around the world to the city’s historic Ca’ d’Oro palace to view the contributions of 22 leading talents in the contemporary art and design spheres. For those who aren’t able to physically attend themselves before the exhibit’s close on November 24—or who want to relive the experience—artnet News has created a 360-degree virtual tour of DYSFUNCTIONAL‘s highlights and the resplendent space in which it is housed.
To begin, visitors will find themselves in the grand entrance hall beneath Nacho Carbonell’s immersive Inside A Forest Cloud Chandelier, a series of 24 cocoon-like light fixtures crafted from steel, metal mesh, paper, and layers of fabric hardener. Connected by branches, the overhead, glittering fixtures—tributes to the gilt and polychrome adornments that once filled the Ca’ d’Oro in its heyday—are meant to collectively form a forest of sensory experience.
From there, viewers can choose to walk towards the Grand Canal, on which the palazzo is situated, to take in other important sites of waterfront Venetian architecture; go upstairs to the balcony level to examine Virgil Abloh’s “sinking chairs” in Acqua Alta, a project conceived with Venice’s topography and rising sea levels in mind; take a stroll through the Ca’d’Oro’s sculpture-filled, interior courtyard; or visit Michele Lamy’s What Are We Fighting For?, a series of hand-crafted punching bags suspended from overhead rafters in the garden that ask viewers to think about what they should be fighting for in their own lives.
