The Outsider Art Fair Paris, dedicated to Art Brut and (as its name suggests) Outsider Art, will return this year for its fourth edition, running alongside FIAC from October 20–23, 2016 at Hôtel du Duc. For the fair’s curated portion this year, Gérard Audinet, director of Paris’s la Maison de Victor Hugo, will organize an exhibition on “mediumistic art,” while OAF Talks will be overseen by critic and curator Emmanuel Daydé.
The fair will feature presentations by 38 exhibitors, 15 of which are new additions—a formidable roster shake-up, to be sure. Returning dealers include Paris’s Galerie Beatrice Soulie, which bills itself as a solely Outsider Art gallery (“Welcome, Outsiders,” says its homepage), and Milan’s Maroncelli 12, which aims to bring Art Brut to Italy.
Returning dealers cited the fair’s strong reputation and ability to expose artists as their primary reason for participating year after year. “[The fair] is well-known in Paris and New York, and more open to both historical and contemporary art,” said Benoit Morand of Galeries Les Yeux Fertiles, Paris, in a phone call with artnet News.
“There’s still after all these years a gap between American and European collectors of Art Brut,” Randall Morris of Cavin Morris Gallery in New York told artnet News. “We are trying to show where it all merges by bringing the work of other artists to Europe.” The gallery will be featuring American artist JB Murray and Japanese artist M’onma at the fair.
Conspicuously absent is Philadelphia’s Fleisher/Ollman Gallery, an Outsider Art Fair mainstay which has shown at all three previous Paris editions. This fall, the gallery is skipping this year’s outing in order to focus on its first-time showing at Frieze Masters, which runs October 6–9 in London.
“We enjoyed doing the [Outsider Art Fair Paris] and we did meet some new clients,” a representative from the gallery told artnet News in a phone conversation. “The Outsider Art Fair in New York has been very successful for us,” she added, noting that the gallery would continue to show there in the immediate future and “wouldn’t rule out” a future return to the City of Light.
