From Los Angeles to Amsterdam, Istanbul and Seoul, a wide range of work by blue-chip masters such as Marc Chagall and Gerhard Richter head to auctions this month, along with a host of more experimental fare.
In anticipation of these April sales, with the help of the artnet Price Database, artnet News compiled a list of five of the most interesting events taking place across the globe this month.
April 9
1. 39th Beyaz Contemporary and Modern Art Auction at Beyaz Müzayede, Istanbul
Here’s a chance to get into Turkey’s modern and contemporary art scene, via works ranging from Burhan Cahit Dogançay’s bright, abstract paintings inspired by city walls to Fikret Mualla’s avant-garde figures.
April 12
2. Spring Auction in Seoul at K Auction, Seoul
Many of Korea’s top contemporary artists are on the block,with highlights including works from the great Lee Ufan and Park Seo-Bo. Moreover, a few big names from the West are sprinkled throughout the sale, including Damien Hirst and Chagall.
April 11–12
3. Postwar and Contemporary Art at Christie’s Amsterdam
One of the standout lots of this two-day spring sale is Imi Knoebel’s Revolver I, at an estimated value of €80,000-120,000. The multi-colored, geometric work is one of the largest of its kind to come to auction, and a rare opportunity for collectors.
April 18
4. Prints and Multiples at Bonham’s Los Angeles
A wide range of prints will be up for auction, from early Old Master Print makers such as Rembrandt and Dürer to modern and contemporary masters including Chagall, Joan Miró, Henri Matisse, and many more. One of the highlights is a group of four prints from Richard Diebenkorn’s “Seated Woman” series.
April 20
5. Images & Objects: Photographs & Photobooks at Swann Galleries, New York
This sale features a variety of iconic 20th-century images, including Ansel Adams’s Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico as well as portraits of H.L. Mencken and Pablo Picasso by Irving Penn.
