As any true art enthusiast knows, one of the great pleasures of visiting a solid satellite fair is viewing (and possibly even purchasing) work by emerging artists who are at the top of their game but perhaps don’t have name recognition yet. This year, UNTITLED, the popular Art Basel in Miami Beach fair, offers an exciting opportunity to do just that.

Sotheby’s Institute, the well-known graduate school for art and the art market, has a booth for the first time featuring a collaboration between Chilean artist and architect Alfredo Jaar and Sotheby’s Institute master’s candidates Aurora Bailey, Julia Mazur, and William Sunstrom. Entitled For Sale, Not For Sale, it cleverly riffs on the politics of the art market.

Two cubical piles of posters sit unassumingly on the floor of the booth. One pile reads “FOR SALE” the other reads “NOT FOR SALE.” The posters are intended to be taken by fairgoers and distributed throughout the event as a very tongue-in-cheek piece of living art that addresses issues of authorship, salability, and the relationships between collectors and artists.

In typical 2014 fashion, social media is meant to play a significant role. Using the hashtag #FOR SALENOTFORSALE, visitors are encouraged to spread the message of the artwork online (and by word of mouth).
