Artists are no longer the easel-bound creatures of yesteryear. Always on a plane—en route to a biennial, a residency, or to scout a new location—they form the most nomadic crew in the already-extremely mobile art world.

But rushing from show to show doesn’t always allow for what artists need most: time. With that in mind, automotive giant BMW and Art Basel have teamed up to create a travelling residency of sorts: the BMW Art Journey.

It will be awarded to two artists per year who have shown in the emerging section of the fair: one in Miami and the other one in Hong Kong. Two juries will draw up a shortlist, inviting selected artists to come up with a proposal. The winning trips will be documented and shared on an online platform.

The jury comprises some of the hottest names in the industry, including the Guggenheim’s Richard Armstrong and Asia Art Archive’s Claire Hsu for Hong Kong and the New Museum’s Massimiliano Gioni and KW Institute of Contemporary Art’s Gabriele Horn for Miami.

A trusty sponsor of Art Basel, BMW has recently showed a particular commitment to the more emerging side of art. At Tate in London, it supports the cutting-edge “live art” program of performances, designed for the web and exclusively showcased online. In Berlin, it backs the ever-popular Gallery Weekend, and the group even recently lent a helping hand to the fledgling Kochi-Muziris Biennale in Southern India.
