The list of exhibitors in first edition of Art Düsseldorf is out, with around 80 established and young galleries from 20 countries signing onto its roster. Taking place from November 17-19, the fair marks the second of MCH Group’s new initiative of worldwide expansion into regional fairs, and is the first to take place in Germany. The Basel-based group and company behind Art Basel took a minority stake in Art Düsseldorf earlier this year, following the announcement of their majority stake in the India Art Fair in fall 2016.

The upcoming fair will show both modern and contemporary art from 1945-2017, as well as individual masterpieces and groups of works dating before 1945. The exhibitor list includes several international galleries from countries like Japan, Taiwan, Israel, and the US, with 60 percent of the participating galleries hailing from Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands.

In reply to artnet News’ inquiry whether the fair can maintain a regional appeal with nearly 40 percent international exhibitors, the fair’s co-founder Walter Gehlen explained that “It is essential for a strong regional art fair to have a substantial international outreach…. Art Düsseldorf is regional, but not provincial.”

Gehlen added that the fair’s manageable size was part of the concept. “We consider being of a modest size as one of our success factors. With our international outreach we will also attract international collectors, who can, together with those from the region, focus on a compact program of high quality.”

As for the considerations that went into finding the right date for the new fair on an overcrowded schedule, he explained that “[a] lot of collectors in the region are entrepreneurs who usually make their budget decisions at the end of the business year.”
