THE DAILY PIC: Seven Sinks, by Maayan Strauss, is a new installation at Andrea Meislin Gallery in New York. Visible through the gallery’s street-side windows, Strauss’s countertop does a lovely job of collapsing the distance–social and economic but also esthetic–between Chelsea’s galleries and the deluxe kitchen showrooms that now occupy so many former gallery spaces further downtown in SoHo. With all its flowing water, the piece also fully materializes the title of Duchamp’s great Fountain, the first readymade based on plumbing supplies – whose urinal, as few now realize, was as deluxe in its day as the best of Kohler’s sinks are now. One contemporary referred to it as “decadent plumbers’ porcelain”. (Photo by Lucy Hogg)
