THE DAILY PIC: This is Three Rectangles by Three Rectangles, Infinite Sheet, one of the fiendishly complex photos by Chicago artist B. Ingrid Olson now on view at Simone Subal Gallery in New York. Her images dive deep down the rabbit hole of photographic representation; they remind me of the mind-bending investigations of Michael Snow, who for decades has probed just what we can see when we see a photo–and where we think we see it. On the other hand, the very fact that they are self-portraits, and of a twenty-something woman, no less, personalizes and romanticizes them just a bit–as though Snow had taken a few hints from Francesca Woodman. And dare I throw Cézanne into the mix?–about as big a compliment as I can pay to any artist. (Courtesy the artist and Simone Subal Gallery)
