Basel, located in the tri-border-area of Switzerland, Germany, and France, is one of the most culturally rich cities in Europe. The largest art museum in Switzerland, Kunstmuseum Basel, is the oldest municipal art collection in the world, and Basel hosts the world’s largest art fair. The city is the warmest in Switzerland, so the summer is a great time to explore the city.

If you are one of the estimated 90,000 art lovers who visit Art Basel every year, you have the chance to see approximately 300 leading galleries from North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia, and Africa, displaying artworks ranging from modern masters to emerging artists. Symposiums, films, and artist talks are part of the fair’s daily program. This year, the 11th edition of the art fair for new and emerging art, VOLTA, opens its doors a few days before Art Basel, and, this year, is taking place at Basel’s landmark venue Markthalle. Three additional art fairs are happening during Basel’s art week: LISTE, celebrating its 20th edition, which is dedicated exclusively to new galleries and is focused primarily on young art; DesignMiami, which is the global forum for design; and SCOPE, which takes place at Basel’s New Art District on the Rhine, and, this year, is focusing on art trends from Korea.

After all these fairs, take the opportunity to explore more art in Basel. Listen to some jazz music and enjoy art in the sculpture garden of gallery MARCdePUECHREDON this Sunday at their summer matinee. Or stop by Laleh June Galerie, presenting the first solo exhibition by French artist Aube Elléouët-Breton, daughter of André Breton, a pioneer of Surrealism, in Switzerland.

In addition to the Kunstmuseum Basel, other important art museums in the city include Museum Tinguely, which has a permanent exhibition on the life and works of Jean Tinguely. Currently, the museum is commemorating the artist Eva Aeppli, who passed away this May, with a presentation of works and photos. One of the newest museums in Basel is Schaulager. It opened in 2003, and is a mix of public museum, conservatory, and art research institute. While Kunstmuseum Basel is closed for restoration, Schaulager took the opportunity to show paintings, sculptures, drawings, installations, photographs, and videos, from classic and modern to contemporary art from the Emanuel Hoffmann Foundation.

Enjoy your summer, Swiss cheese, chocolate, and, of course, art in Basel!
