American Dealer Matt Moravec, who for the past two years has been in Düsseldorf, Germany studying with artist Christopher Williams at Kunstakademie while simultaneously running an art space called Off Vendome, will open a gallery by the same name in Manhattan’s Chelsea area, reports ArtNews.
The gallery is a two-floor space at 254 West 23rd street, above a restaurant and just down the street from the Chelsea Hotel. Although the venue is a good two avenues away from most Chelsea galleries, Moravec says he likes it that way. “This area is sort of a no man’s land, which I love, but it’s still walkable from the West Chelsea gallery area.”
For its first exhibition, opening on February 26, Off Vendome will show Museum Triennial artist Lena Henke and German painter Max Brand. Moravec will keep his space in Düsseldorf, which is currently showing New York-based artist Sam Anderson.
As of now, Moravec has not disclosed which artist he plans to represent in New York. “That will happen slowly,” the dealer said, “as I build my program.”
