Eva Presenhuber, the Zurich-based art dealer with an outpost in New York, is expanding to a second location in the Swiss city, due to open on January 25, 2020.

The Austrian-born powerhouse dealer, who is also a founder of the LISTE art fair, has been based in Zurich for 30 years. She says she wanted to keep her growth local because “it has always been of vital importance to be able to bring fantastic international artists to Zurich.”

The new gallery, which will be in the residential and culturally vibrant area of Rämistrasse, will open inside a 19th-century storefront building with three exhibition spaces on the second floor. It will contrast with the gallery’s current white-cube space, which is in a more industrial quarter of the city.

“We have been very happy with our current gallery in Zurich-West,” Presenhuber said in a statement. “However, with a continuously growing program, it became clear to me that I needed to think beyond our existing Zurich and New York exhibition spaces.”

The new gallery will open with a solo exhibition of new sculptures and wall works by Swiss artist Valentin Carron. Solo exhibitions by Josh Smith, Sue Williams, and Joe Bradley are set to follow. The gallery also plans exhibitions by American sculptor Justin Matherly and Austrian painter Tobias Pils in its older Zurich location. In New York, the gallery will present an exhibition by Tschabalala Self, who Presenhuber began representing this fall, in May 2020.

This is not the first time Presenhuber will have two spaces in Zürich. From 2011 to 2017, she also had multiple locations in the city, but closed the older one shortly after opening her New York gallery.

Other galleries have also been expanding in Switzerland. In June, Gagosian said it would open a location in Basel, and late last year, Hauser & Wirth announced they would be opening in St. Moritz. Both galleries already have locations in Switzerland.
