The exhibitor list for the first-ever edition of Art Berlin is out. The fair takes place from September 14-17, replacing art berlin contemporary (abc), which saw one of its smallest editions last year.
With a new name and a bigger team, Art Berlin fair is co-managed by abc and Koelnmesse, the company behind Germany’s oldest and grandest art fair, Art Cologne. It’s a friendly takeover that grew out of a scheduling clash between Art Cologne and Berlin Gallery Weekend this past April, which brought the directors of the two fairs, Daniel Hug and Maike Cruse respectively, to the negotiating table. (abc and Berlin Gallery Weekend are managed by the same company.)
Having dropped the word “contemporary” from the title of its predecessor, the new fair’s title gives some clues to its approach towards the list of participating galleries to also include dealers offering Modern art. The four-day fair includes some 110 galleries hailing from 16 different countries. Unsurprisingly, most exhibitors are based in Berlin, but there are some dealers alighting in the German Capital from farther afield and showing here for the first time, like Roberto Paradise from Puerto Rico or Neon Parc from Australia.
