Art Basel has announced its list of participating galleries, naming the 291 international exhibitors who will travel to Switzerland this summer for the fair’s 48th edition, which runs June 15–18.
As befits one of the art world’s oldest and biggest fairs, Art Basel has attracted galleries from 34 countries and six continents, including 17 first-time participants. Among the newcomers are Canada, Di Donna, Chapter NY, and Leila Heller Gallery, from New York; the Box and Parrasch Heijnen, from Los Angeles; Kalfayan Galleries, Athens; P420, Bologna; Magician Space, Beijing; and Gypsum Gallery, Cairo.
In addition to the main Galleries section, the fair’s other sectors are Edition, (dedicated to prints and limited edition specialists), Feature (focusing on curated presentations from the past and present), and Statements (showcasing young and emerging galleries and artists).
In an email to artnet News, dealer Emmanuel Di Donna, whose eponymous gallery will participate in the main Galleries sector for the first time, said he was “delighted” to be accepted to the fair. “We recently enjoyed enormous success with our first participation in the Miami edition of Art Basel,” he said. “The fair in Switzerland now allows us to curate a selection of stunning works… in a geographical context that highlights their historical importance.”
“Obviously we’re extremely excited to be participating in Art Basel,” dealer Nicole Russo of Chapter NY, a first-time exhibitor who will be showing at the Statements sector, told artnet News in a phone call. “I’ll be presenting a solo presentation with the artist Sam Anderson; it’s a really strong platform for her, and for the gallery.”
Dealer Qu Kejie of Beijing’s Magician Space, one of three new exhibitors from the Asia Pacific region, told artnet News in an email that the gallery “is delighted to…represent on this international stage a new generation of artists from China.” He continued, “We are inspired to work as a bridge that cultivates new relationships between artists, collectors, institutions, and museums that challenge the way Chinese contemporary art can be understood and imagined.”
Outside of the exhibition hall, Samuel Leuenerger, founder of the Swiss non-profit SALTS, will again curate Art Basel’s popular Parcours series of site-specific sculptures, and performances.
Meanwhile, the film program will be curated for the third consecutive time by the Cairo-based film curator Maxa Zoller, in partnership with new appointee Marian Masone, a New York-based film curator.
