David Zwirner gallery has included several of these divans in its latest show of the works of Franz West. I’ve always loved how West’s furniture looks so contingent. Each West sofa seems to come together almost haphazardly, by accident, as furniture almost never does, with a minimal and casual intervention from West as its maker. Whereas his sculptures, much as I enjoy them, are fairly traditional in how carefully they are made and in how fixed they are in their form – in their artistic ontology, you could almost say. The sofas seem ontologically loose, and novel.
