As far as the art world is concerned, London is the place to be this week, as the 14th edition of Frieze London prepares to open to the public October 6.
Those of us stuck across the pond, however, are already experiencing serious FOMO thanks to the initial Instagram posts from the VIP preview on October 5.
At a fair where even the bathrooms are a work of art, with over 160 galleries hailing from all over the globe, there’s no shortage of social media-friendly works on view.
The initial round of images suggests that among the fair’s over 1,000 participating artists, the stand out photo opp is Portia Munson’s Pink Project, part of New York gallery P.P.O.W.’s presentation of four generations of feminist artists. The seminal 1993 work, which debuted in the 1994 exhibition “Bad Girls” at the New Museum in New York, gathers together thousands of found objects, all of them pink.
Shown in numerous configurations over the years, the Frieze iteration of Pink Project is laid out on a large table, with a towering pile of feminine objects stacked along its center. It makes for a pleasing array in photographs, but also offers a pointed commentary about the societal expectations placed upon women and the commercialization of femininity.
