The Frieze Art Fair is rolling out the red carpet for its inaugural Los Angeles edition. The fair announced today the current list of roughly 70 galleries that will participate in the debut event at Paramount Studios in February 2019. The lineup includes major American and international names such as Luhring Augustine, Marian Goodman, and David Zwirner, as well as local dealers Blum & Poe, Kayne Griffin Corcoran, and David Kordansky, among others.
The number of exhibitors is up slightly from the original estimate of 60, a reflection of galleries’ eagerness to get in on the ground floor of a tested brand, particularly in a town with as fickle an appetite for fairs as Los Angeles. Frieze also has a host committee that reads like a Vanity Fair Oscars party guest list: Tobey Maguire, Serena Williams and Alexis Ohanian, and Salma Hayek Pinault and Francois-Henri Pinault have all signed on.
The event is already having some gravitational pull. The city’s longer-running contemporary fair, Art Los Angeles Contemporary, has moved its 2019 edition to February from January to coincide with the London import, and a new fair launched by collector Dean Valentine will be held at the same time.
Frieze’s LA edition will be directed by Bettina Korek and held inside a custom-built structure designed by architect Kulapat Yantrasast. Curator Hamza Walker has been tapped to organize the talks and music program.
Several dealers from outside LA who spoke to artnet News grumbled about the fact that there was no formal application process for the fair and that galleries were simply informed they had been chosen. A spokeswoman says exhibitors were selected by a “peer committee” that included Daniela Gareh (White Cube); Carol Greene (Greene Naftali); David Kordansky (David Kordansky Gallery); Mara McCarthy (The Box); Shaun Regen (Regen Projects); and Matthew Wood (Mendes Wood DM).
“With an overwhelming amount of interest and only around 70 spaces, Frieze LA required a different approach,” the representative told artnet News. “All Frieze fairs are international, but it’s also important that they reflect the city and country that they’re in, so Frieze wanted to ensure a focused and thoughtful selection of galleries.”
Just a few of the invited galleries were unable to participate, a reflection of the demand for a top-flight West Coast fair among local and international galleries alike. “The extremely positive reaction to Frieze Los Angeles from galleries is testament to the importance of this city which is so rich in great artists, museums, galleries, and art schools,” Frieze’s Victoria Siddall said in a statement.
