Despite an uneven market, French dealer Emmanuel Perrotin, whose Galerie Perrotin boasts outposts in New York, Paris, and Hong Kong, has announced plans to open a 590-square-foot “office showroom” in Seoul, South Korea.
“There are a lot of dealers in Europe who just want to complain,” Perrotin once told W Magazine. “I’m rather positive and energetic.”
According to the Art Newspaper, the space will open next month with an exhibition of French artist Laurent Grasso, followed by a solo show by New York-based pop street artist KAWS (a favorite of musician and collector Pharrell Williams, who curated a show last year for the gallery in Paris).
“The space will include a bookshop that will display the editions & books printed by the Gallery,” said a spokesperson for the gallery in an email to artnet News.
Amid Armory Week madness, Perrotin’s New York space celebrated the opening of “Erró: Paintings from 1959 to 2016” this past week to acclaim from critics and casual visitors alike. The Icelandic pop artist culls imagery from sources like comic books and American pop culture, combining figures like Russian president Vladimir Putin and American pop singer Miley Cyrus.
The gallery is also rumored to be in talks to open yet another space in France (the gallery currently operates two) inside the Les Moulins, located in the village of Boissy-le Châtel outside Paris. However, Perrotin told the Art Newspaper, “we haven’t decided anything yet.”
