In anticipation of Gallery Weekend Berlin, which will take place in Germany’s capital from April 26 to 28, 2013, galleries from Munich to Hamburg are presenting exciting new exhibitions . 401contemporary in Berlin presents an installation-based solo exhibition by Thomas Feuerstein (Austrian, b.1968), and at Barbara Gross Galerie in Munich, Tejal Shah (Indian, b.1979) unveils a new five-channel video installation. These interactive events are sure to draw viewers across Germany to this exciting weekend celebrating the arts.

Thomas Feuerstein, Idee, 2012, 401contemporary, Berlin, Germany

In CANDYLAB at 401contemporary, Thomas Feuerstein merges art and science, using biochemical sculptures and paintings as part of his investigation into the written word, the root of intellectual discovery. To create these scientific experiments, the artist transformed the pages of a text by Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, The Phenomenology of Spirit; Feuerstein decomposed these pages into sugar, the base material of his work. The sculptures and paintings were then installed in a laboratory-like setting, eerily mixed with Art Nouveau furniture to give an aged familiarity to the scene. The installation invokes a connection between acts typical to human experience—like eating or reading—and artistic construction. Through these creatively engineered works, viewers are meant to see the relation between written thought and actualized form.

Thomas Feuerstein: CANDYLAB will be on view from April 25 to June 15 at Potsdamer Strasse 81 B, 10785 Berlin, Germany.

Tejal Shah, Lucid Dreaming 5, 2013, Barbara Gross Galerie, Munich Germany

Although the main event is happening in Berlin, Munich is still abuzz with exciting new exhibitions on view. At Barbara Gross Galerie, Tejal Shah presents a five-channel video installation, which first premiered at dOCUMENTA 13, entitled Between the Waves. The film follows the journey of fantasized creatures trying to find their way through an exotic land, performing spiritual and erotic rituals along the way. Through the protagonists of her film, the artist seeks to explore our own identifying qualities amongst our peers, and ideas of diversity and culture within the realm of her predominantly feminist rubric. The experience of viewing the piece is sensual and contemplative, suggesting Shah ’s interest in mysticism and eroticism within our culture.

Tejal Shah: Between the Waves will be on view from April 25 to June 22, 2013, at Theresienstr. 56 Hof 1, 80333, Munich, Germany.
