Missing the lavish parties, neon, and wild fashion courtesy of last week’s Miami fairs?

So are we, which is why this week we are re-living the experience via Be Fabulous, the Roxanne Lowit (American, b.1970) solo show opening at the Steven Kasher Gallery in New York City. The show boasts over 40 vintage and modern black and white photographs, as well as over 20 large-scale color photographs from one of the fashion world’s first behind-the-scenes photographers. The series conveys Lowit’s ability to capture candid scenes from the lives of the fashion world’s elite, leaving the viewer with a sense that Lowit must have become one herself to photograph such intimate and insider moments. The red lips, white hats, and bare skin in this mini-retrospective will make you forget that you’re in the middle of a New York winter.

If Lowit’s snapshots of the rich and famous left you desperate for normalcy, Corpus Americus, curated by Dexter Wimberly, focuses on the curator’s specialty, contemporary urban history. Driscoll Babcock houses a collection of new works by 10 emerging and mid-career artists, exploring one thematic question: What does it mean to be an American today? The group exhibit provides multimedia works, including painting, sculpture, and drawing, to represent well-rounded opinions of the American identity. Expect nothing less than a fantastically contemplative show from Wimberly, who has exhibited over 150 works by individual artists.

A five-minute walk from Driscoll Babcock brings you to the Robert Mann Gallery, where photographer Chip Hooper disproves the theory that painters own abstraction. His solo show, entitled Chip Hooper: Surf, is a very personal body of work depicting the artists’s long-time muse, the seascape. Rejecting the surrounding landscape and focusing solely on the water itself, the artist uses wave patterns, chaos, serenity, minimalism, and texture to create purely visceral abstract photographs that are meant to evoke emotion in the viewer.
