And we’re back. With the German art scene’s two-month-long summer slumber behind us, it’s time to dive into the fall art season. The season kicked off last weekend in Cologne and Düsseldorf with the annual DC Open gallery walk, offering up a smattering of established talents like Richard Smith and Jonathan Meese—and some fresh faces too.

But the Germany’s main fall art event is still to come. (Just don’t tell the Rhinelanders.) Gallery openings surrounding Berlin Art Week start this weekend, with young guns like Chris Succo and more established exponents like Brazilian artist Marepe getting a jump-start on the bustle to come when the week officially starts on September 16th.

For the first time, Berlin Art Week features two official gallery nights organized by Art Berlin Contemporary (abc), the German capital’s alternative answer to an art fair. The nights’ crop of artists is ripe. From Marc Camille Chaimowicz’s debut at Galerie Neu (it’s said to include 40 live birds) to major shows of art world A-listers like Ai Weiwei, Julie Mehretu, and Thomas Scheibitz, the city’s dealers are presenting a hearty argument for Berlin’s artistic primacy on the Continent. See our 25 favorite shows this fall, below.
