The hotly anticipated inaugural edition of Independent Brussels has announced its dates and exhibitors.

The fair will take place on April 20-23, 2016, at the 50,000-square-foot Vanderborght Building, a stunning 1930s building located smack in the middle of the city, which once housed the Dexia bank’s art collection.

A few days ago, it was also announced that Olivier Pesret and Liv Vaisberg would be co-directors of the Brussels branch of the fair, which was originally founded by dealers Elizabeth Dee and Darren Flook in New York in 2010.

Vaisberg has become a key player in the buzzing art scene of the European capital. She is also the co-founder of the Brussels-based fair Poppositions, which launched in 2012, and follows an alternative fair model: Exhibitors are charged a modest fee of €200, tickets are just €5, and the entire event is run completely by volunteers.

“Independent has been a model and personal inspiration,” Vaisberg said in a statement. “Its arrival to Brussels is highly anticipated and I am excited to take on the challenges now, as Brussels emerges as the new city of attraction for the contemporary art scene.”

Brussels is indeed positioning itself as an essential art hub in Europe, and the third week of April is becoming a particularly busy week. Independent’s main competitor, Art Brussels, will take place from April 22-24, while the smaller Poppositions is slated for April 20-24.
