Lisson Gallery, which represents major contemporary artists including Ai Weiwei, Anish Kapoor, Marina Abramovic, Carmen Herrera, and Lawrence Weiner, has announced plans to open an 8,500 square foot space underneath the High Line in Chelsea. The outpost will open sometime next year, joining two existing exhibition spaces in London and one in Milan. The gallery will be housed in a newly constructed building, which will span the city block from 24th through 23rd street, underneath the High Line. The address will be 504 West 24th Street. Some may remember the long-vacant lot as the site of a pop-up Banksy exhibition during the street artist’s New York “residency” last fall.

Lisson was established in 1967 in London, and is credited with presenting some of the first European shows of Minimal and Conceptual artists like Sol Lewitt, Dan Graham, Robert Mangold, Daniel Buren, and On Kawara, in addition to pioneering British artists Art & Language, John Latham and Richard Long. Lisson Gallery’s second artistic generation from the 1980s introduced the New British Sculptors, notably Tony Cragg, Richard Deacon, Shirazeh Houshiary and Anish Kapoor.

According to a press release, the Chelsea space “will present a program of shows drawing from the 46 artists and estates the gallery represents, many of whom are not currently represented in the US. Alex Logsdail will direct and lead the New York space to build on the gallery’s global scope, and is joined by two US directors, Jeannie Freilich and Angela Brazda, who have been based at Lisson Gallery’s offices and viewing spaces on Eldridge Street for the past two years.”
