Whether you are visiting the City of Angels during the month with the most hours of sunshine or you are a local Los Angeleno, we have plenty of ideas to satisfy your artsy hunger.
Celebrate the 50th anniversary of the largest and oldest art museum in Los Angeles, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and visit the birthday exhibition. A selection of highlights from the recent donation of A. Jerrold Perenchio, a collection of masterpieces from the 19th and 20th centuries—with works by Edgar Degas, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Edouard Vuillard—as well as art from Africa and decorative art are currently on view. Founded by the oil billionaire J. Paul Getty, the Getty Museum is another important institution. Admission is always free, and each spring, the museum hires goats to mow the lawn around the building. The current exhibition “Light, Paper, Process: Reinventing Photography” gives an overview of the experimental practices within the medium of photography and how artists are reinventing it.
In the numerous art galleries in Los Angeles, you can find contemporary art alongside traditional paintings, prints, sculpture, and photography. Every second Thursday of the month, The Downtown Art Walk, which includes gallery openings, activities, and special events, guides you to exciting and new events, and the galleries keep their doors until around 10 p.m.
Photographic architectural abstractions of the Cedars Sinai Medical Center complex in Los Angeles are presented by Couturier Gallery. Roger Lerner took these images with an iPhone. “iPhoneography,” as it’s playfully called, has become a genre of art. Photographs taken by ‘traditional’ cameras by can be seen at the exhibition “Desert Voices – Pamela Littky and Stefanie Schneider” at De Re Gallery.
At Palos Verdes Art Center, a non-profit art school and gallery, in partnership with Building Bridges Art Exchange and Mixografia, the current exhibition features prints by American artists Helen Frankenthaler, Kiki Smith, and Donald Sultan, among others. “Important Works on Paper,” with examples of abstraction, Minimalism, Pop Art, and Photorealism by other American artists, such as Wayne Thiebaud, Sam Francis, and Jim Dine, are currently on view at Jonathan Novak Contemporary Art.
Enjoy your summer break and the artistic atmosphere in Hollywood!
