On Thursday Marianne Boesky Gallery announced the expansion of its Chelsea space on West 24th Street and the closure of its Clinton Street outpost on the Lower East Side.

The gallery will move into the building adjacent to its current location, which will more than double its floor space—creating 13,000 square feet when complete.

Gallerist Marianne Boesky said that the decision to consolidate her presence in Chelsea at the expense of its Lower East Side location and its Upper East Side location, which closed in March, was based on the “interests and needs of our artists.”

“Experimentation with space and architecture in diverse NYC locations, from Chelsea to the Upper East Side, has been an essential part of our vision, evolving and growing to meet and complement the changing interests and needs of our artists,” Boesky explained in a statement. “Our upcoming exhibition schedule highlights the diversity of what we can now do in Chelsea.”

The additional space, she argues, will allow the gallery to present more ambitious solo and group shows, as well as mount concurrent exhibitions.

The new and improved gallery opens June 23 with a group show curated by the artist and writer Chris Wiley, which will feature works by artists Thornton Dial, Jay Heikes, and Lee Mullican.
