Chinese ink artists are profoundly relevant to contemporary Chinese society, yet until recently have been largely neglected by curators and critics alike. Gallerist Michael Goedhuis, who has been collecting and dealing contemporary Chinese art since the early nineties, examines the issue and addresses why ink art has been so undervalued—and why now is precisely the right time for collectors to take another look.
Michael Goedhuis’s gallery in London represents contemporary ink artists working in many different styles, ranging from works that appear traditional but, in fact, embody powerful and innovative initiatives, by artists Liu Dan Li Xubai, Li Huayi, and Yang Yanping, to the unambiguously avant-garde, demonstrated by artists such as Yang Jiechang, Qiu Anxiong, Qiu Zhijie, and others.
