Brussels, the capital and largest city in Belgium, is also home to a burgeoning contemporary art scene. With no centralized art district, gallery hopping is the perfect way to experience every area of this vibrant city. Kicking off the first month of fall are a series of shows featuring everything from performance art and avant-garde works to paintings and sculptures. If this summer’s extensive roster of group shows left you wanting more, be sure to check out Aeroplastics Contemporary, exhibiting works by Katia Bourdarel, Axel Pahlavi, and Jerome Zonder, among others. Or, stop by Galerie Albert Baronian, where their group show, “Picture/Painting/Object,” will feature historical pieces from the French Supports/Surfaces movement, including works by the movement’s founder, Claude Viallat. Also showing works by Viallat is Galerie Daniel Templon, which is kicking off its new season with recent and older paintings by the artist. On tap at Galerie Greta Meert is Louise Lawler, whose show “No Drones,” last seen at Sprüth Magers in London, features black-and-white images traced from her iconic photographs, printed on vinyl and mounted directly on the wall. And don’t miss Jack Smith, whose show at Gladstone Gallery presents an exciting survey of performance and theater works from his storied career as a member of the New York underground theater scene in the 1970s. Whatever your preference, Brussels offers up more than enough artistic excursions to start your September off right.
