More than 450 costumes, set pieces, and props from the hit Netflix series The Crown are going on display at Bonhams ahead of being auctioned in February 2024. The show, which has won 21 Emmy Awards, recently concluded its sixth and final season.
Written by Peter Morgan and streaming on Netflix, the series follows the reign of Queen Elizabeth II from 1947 to 2005. Over the course of the show, the monarch has been played by Claire Foy, Olivia Coleman, and Imelda Staunton. The cast also features Elizabeth Debicki, Matt Smith, Helena Bonham Carter, Emma Corrin, and Dominic West.
Headline lots at the Bonhams’ auction include a black dress worn by Debicki—inspired by Princess Diana’s infamous “Revenge Dress” which was designed by Christina Stambolian in 1994—which has a £8,000–£12,000 ($10,000–$15,000) estimate.
Among the props included is the world’s only reproduction of the Gold State Coach used by Claire Foy in scenes of the Queen’s 1953 coronation (estimate: £30,000–£50,000, $38,000–$63,000). The original coach has been used at every British coronation since 1831 and is the third-oldest surviving coach in the U.K. A recreation of the Queen’s coronation ordaining dress, imperial mantle, and red coronation robe is also included in the sale (estimate: £20,000–£30,000, $25,000–$38,000), as well as a reproduction of Princess Diana’s sapphire and diamond engagement ring (estimate: £2,000–£3,000 ($2,500–$3,800).
An exhibition of the lots is going on display at Bonhams’ London headquarters from January 11 through February 5, 2024, with free tickets available via the auction house’s website. The live sale of around 150 lots will take place on February 7, with the online auction of 300 lots beginning January 11.
“Not only is this an incredible opportunity to own pieces from the landmark show,” said Charlie Thomas, Bonhams U.K. group director for house sales and private and iconic collections, “it is also the closest anyone can come to owning the real thing—be it the façade of 10 Downing Street or Princess Diana’s engagement ring.”
The props, costumes, and sets in The Crown have won the program several awards including ones from the British Film Designers Guild Awards, the Set Decorators Society of America Awards, and a Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Award.
Proceeds raised from the sale will help fund Left Bank Pictures’s The Crown Scholarship Programme at the National Film and Television School.
