New York has the longest street in the United States, the most frequented bridge, and the largest subway line in the world, but it is also known for its record-breaking auctions. Never before has so much money been spent at a single sale. This Monday, art in the amount of more than $700 million went under the hammer at Christie’s New York, including the most expensive artwork Les Femmes d´Alger by Pablo Picasso, which was purchased for almost $180 million. Several other world records were broken in this sale.
If you don’t want to spend your money at a record-breaking auction, you can discover new art at the art fairs going on this week. Explore the vibrancy of Harlem, its participating cultural institutions, and emerging Harlem artists at the FLUX Art Fair. Or experience the most exciting contemporary galleries from around the world at Frieze New York, the world’s leading contemporary art fair. Over 190 galleries are showing their inventory on the East River. Talks and educational programs are included. And, located on the Hudson River, Art Miami New York caters to both seasoned and new art collectors who are looking to experience the best of what the global contemporary art market has to offer. In Red Hook, you have the opportunity to explore contemporary African art at the 1:54 Contemporary African Art Fair.
While all these art fairs are going on, a lot of galleries have special exhibitions to engage fair visitors coming to their exhibition spaces. Paintings and drawings from the Ani Art Academies can be seen in the exhibition “SEXƎƧ,” the third collaboration with Rehs Contemporary. If you want to see Hopper-esque paintings of America and New York by Nigel van Wieck, don’t miss “Connect,” closing tomorrow. You also have a bit more time to discover the solo exhibition of Pop artist Russell Young with his new portfolio “Jackie O.” To see more exhibitions going on in the city check out last week’s edition of the Must-See Art Guide: New York and 6 Must-See New York Gallery Shows During Frieze New York.
New York, which hosted a record 56 million tourists in 2014, is home to hundreds of art museums, which have a lot of interesting shows to offer as well. After the controversial Björk show at MoMA, the curator has attempted to calm adversaries with the next show by multimedia artist Yoko Ono. The “Yoko Ono: One Woman Show 1960–1971” opens this Sunday.
If you would like to enjoy the nice weather and art at the same time, visit the exhibition “Frida Kahlo: Art, Garden, Life” in the New York Botanical Garden, where a rare display of more than a dozen original Kahlo paintings and works on paper are featured. Learn more about Kahlo’s life and enjoy Mexican-inspired events.
Try to break your own record and visit as many as art events as you can this month in New York!
