Just one week after Frieze New York wrapped its 2022 edition, the art world swerved to the other side of the globe to take in Art Basel Hong Kong.
The scaled-down art fair, which was postponed from its original March dates and preceded the fair’s flagship Basel show by mere weeks, featured 130 galleries from 28 countries and territories (15 of which are first-time exhibitors), which is just a few more than half of the 2019 edition, where 242 galleries were spread across two floors. There was also an uptick in “ghost booths,” with 76 satellite exhibitors compared to the 56 that showed in 2021.
“Despite reduced international attendance, steady sales throughout the duration of the show reflected the city’s growing and engaged collector base, including many first-time buyers,” Art Basel global director Marc Spiegler said in a statement.
Here’s our roundup of all the prices galleries chose to share with us. But bear in mind that some dealers occasionally inflate prices (or sometimes make them up) and others withhold sales figures altogether. We do not include sales unaccompanied by figures. All prices have been converted to USD for ease of reading.
