As the East Coast freezes over this winter, many artists, collectors, and art enthusiasts find solace in sunny Los Angeles where a number of renowned art fairs are taking place. The entertainment capital of the world will cement itself as an art capital this winter by encapsulating an international clientele and a collection of the world’s most unique and sought-after masterpieces.

From January 15 through 19, the Los Angeles Convention Center will be brimming with the art and entertainment cultural elite. Looking back at the success of last year, when the 2013 LA Art Show hosted more than 100 prominent galleries and drew more than 56,000 visitors, the 2014 LA Art Show is expected to draw equally large crowds. The highly anticipated event will be divided into four sections this year to highlight the incredibly comprehensive oeuvre: The Modern & Contemporary Section, The Historic & Traditional Contemporary Section, The Vintage Poster Section, and The IFPDA Los Angeles Print Fair.

Some great galleries to check out this year at the LA Art Show include Bonner David Galleries, a Scottsdale, AZ transplant, which is hosting a unique collection of noted artists. The gallery is also bringing in their exhibiting artists to offer collectors and enthusiasts a chance to meet and discuss their work.

Marc Chagall, Les Fleurs Rouge, 1973, lithograph in colors on Arches paper, Denis Bloch Fine Art, Beverly Hills, CA

In celebration of their forthcoming gallery space in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, D.C., Guarisco Gallery will be exhibiting in LA for the first time in 10 years. Known for its museum-quality 19th- and 20th-century painting and sculpture, the gallery will present Modern and Contemporary works alongside its traditional inventory.

Roy Lichtenstein, Modern Art II, 1996, screenprint in colors on Lanaquarelle watercolor paper, Denis Bloch Fine Art, Beverly Hills, CA

Denis Bloch Fine Art is a must-see, with works by Modern and Contemporary masters Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881–1973), Robert Rauschenberg (American, 1925–2008), and Marc Chagall (French/Russian, 1887–1985), to name a few.

Abby M. Taylor Fine Art has an amazing booth this year as well, boasting a stunning selection of Abstract Expressionist icons, as well as Modern and Impressionist greats.

The program will include lectures, tours, and special exhibitions from top galleries. The LA Art Show offers a true fair-within-a-fair experience. Be sure to check out the IFPDA (International Fine Print Dealer’s Association) section of the fair. The IFPDA always curates an excellent selection of galleries, art dealers, and publishers committed to the highest quality prints. In addition, attendees are also granted entrance to the Los Angeles Jewelry, Antique & Design Show in Hall H, right next door.

From January 16 through 19, the 60,000-square-foot art hub in downtown Los Angeles, L.A. Mart, is hosting photo l.a. This year marks the 23rd edition of photo l.a., which showcases the evolution of photography and photo-based art from classical to Contemporary.

This year, photo l.a. will honor award-winning celebrity photographer Douglas Kirkland (Canadian, b.1934). There will be a wide selection of photography exhibited dating back to the early 19th century. International galleries will come together in this unique space to support the downtown Los Angeles art scene and to celebrate photography. Some booths to check out include LA-based gallery Mixografia, which produces and publishes handmade paper prints and multiples, and Monroe Gallery of Photography of Santa Fe, which deals in a classic selection of iconic black and white photography.

Art Los Angeles Contemporary will top-off this month for LA. The fair will be held from January 30 through February 2 at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica. This 40,000-square-foot art space will host 70 top international blue-chip and emerging international galleries and maintain a strong focus on LA galleries. ALAC sets the stage for the most influential and innovative Contemporary galleries, artists, and collectors to come together against the backdrop of the blossoming LA art scene.

The fair includes a panel of discussions lead by world-class artists and museum curators, and a fantastic film screening and performance series. Some of artnet’s LA member galleries include M+B, which always promises an amazing selection of photography and prints, and ACME Los Angeles, which exhibits a wide range of work, including challenging new work by Los Angeles artists.
