After one of the coldest winters on record for most of the United States, the Palm Springs Fine Art Fair has never looked so inviting. The fair, now in its third year, takes place in the beautiful Coachella Valley, and has become increasingly popular among galleries and visitors alike. Scheduled to take place over the long Presidents’ Day weekend, the valley’s population explodes, from 400,000 permanent residents to over 800,000 residents and visitors. The fair itself will host 60-plus galleries, with over 2,500 artworks, and is expected to have 12,000-plus attendees throughout its three days.
What makes this fair special is not only its fabulously warm and sunny weather, but its proximity to some of the highest income zip codes in the country, including Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage, and Indian Wells. This area has recently seen a flurry of artistic activity, with the opening of new galleries, the Palm Springs Art Museum, and a generally energetic cultural scene.
The fair specializes in Post-War and Contemporary Art, and there is no shortage of exciting pieces to see. Heather James Fine Art will debut Steve Maloney’s newest work, Ride Em Copter, a life-sized helicopter sculpture, combining the artist’s interests in Pop Art, the Wild West, and 21st-century luxury.
Making the journey from the East Coast to the West Coast, New York galleries Addison Rowe, Jane Kahan Gallery, and Katharina Rich Perlow Fine Art are all participating in this year’s fair, with a wide variety of artworks. Addison Rowe will be featuring Roy Lichtenstein (American, 1923–1997) and Joseph Stella (American, 1877–1946). Jane Kahan Gallery will be showing works by Fernand Léger (French, 1881–1955), Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881–1973), and René Magritte (Belgian, 1898–1967). Contemporary artists John Grillo (American, b.1917) and Donald Baechler (American, b.1956) will be featured in Katharina Rich Perlow’s booth.
For those who support the artistic rivalry between the coasts, there are many galleries representing the West, such as Los Angeles’s Jonathan Novak Contemporary Art and Thomas Paul Fine Art, as well as San Francisco’s Caldwell Snyder Gallery.
One thing is for sure, if you are lucky enough to make it to this year’s Palm Springs Fine Art Fair, you will not be disappointed.
