Zona Maco, one of the most important Contemporary art fairs in Latin America, opens February 5, 2014. The name of the fair is derived from the Spanish word “zona,” which means zone, and the acronym Maco, which stands for México Arte Contemporáneo (Mexican Contemporary Art). This year marks the 11th anniversary of the fair, which is hosted in the beautiful Centro de Exposiciones Banamex in Mexico City, Mexico.
Zona Maco 2014 will feature over 130 galleries from around the world, and will include works by over 1,500 artists, such as Wifredo Lam (Cuban, 1902–1982), Gabriel Orozco (Mexican/American, b.1962), Roberto Matta (Chilean, 1911–2002), and Retna (American, b.1979). The fair presents the most important Contemporary Art in Latin America, and has been growing steadily over the past 11 years, drawing exhibitors, collectors, and gallery owners from around the world.
From February 5 through 9, paintings, sculptures, installations, video art, and photographs can be viewed in over 10,000 square meters of exhibition space. Zona Maco is divided into six different sections, each showcasing different art genres. This year, the sections are as follows: Main Section, New Proposals, Zona Maco South, Modern Art, Design, Publications, and Collector’s Program. Participating artnet Galleries members include UNIX Gallery, which will be showing work by Desire Obtain Cherish, Servando Galeria de Arte, which will feature Karlos Pérez (Cuban), Freight + Volume, showcasing work by emerging and established artists, and Gazelli Art House, featuring work by Aziz and Cucher.
The Latin American Art market has done very well over the past year, and Zona Maco is expected to be extremely successful. The galleries exhibiting at the fair represent some of the most well-known Latin American artists in the world.
