London’s Thomas Dane Gallery will show an artwork by John Gerrard that has received the stamp of approval of movie star and collector Leonardo DiCaprio at this week’s Art Basel fair in Switzerland. (See What to See and Buy at Art Basel 2015.)

Solar Reserve (Tonopah, Nevada), an LED wall sculpture, depicts a Nevada solar energy facility. The work turned heads when it went on display in fall 2014 at New York’s Lincoln Center, courtesy of the Public Art Fund. At the facility, 10,000 mirrors track the movement of the sun to generate enough energy to power 70,000 homes.

In this monumental work, Gerard used 3D technology to simulate the Nevada site down to the smallest detail (see John Gerrard’s Chilling View of Solar Heat).

The sculpture is an edition of the same work that DiCaprio is giving to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (see Leonardo DiCaprio Donates Gerrard Installation To LACMA).

DiCaprio’s devotion to environmental causes is well-known. In May 2013, Christie’s New York hosted an auction to raise money for the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation, which intends to raise ecological awareness and preserve the environment. The sale totaled $38.8 million on an estimate of $15 million, and set records for 13 artists, from Carol Bove to Sterling Ruby.

Dane will also show works by Lynda Benglis, Walead Beshty, Michel François, Jean-Luc Moulène, Lari Pittman and Kelley Walker, much of which, according to the gallery, “shares a dystopian view of America.” Okay.
