If you’re heading to Basel and have some time to kill beforehand, you’re in luck. The city known for its operas, ballets, architecture, and history is the happening place to be this weekend, all thanks to Vienna Gallery Weekend. In its sixth edition, this year, 21 Viennese galleries will be showcasing the best they have to offer. Other activities include discussions, tours, and performances, which are held each year during the three-day event.
For those of you who missed yesterday’s kickoff event at Galerie Ernst Hilger, “Arman: The Colours of Music” is on view through the beginning of July. The gallery is showcasing various works by Arman—from his works on paper to his famous destructive violin sculptures. From there, head down the street Charim Galerie to see works by Romanian artist Anca Munteanu Rimnic, in which she addresses remembrance, hope, and longing in her short film Ursu. Established gallery Christine König Galerie, which showcased Ai Weiwei’s works at last year’s gallery weekend, will be featuring a group show titled “REVUE 25,” with works by Pierre Bismuth, Nancy Spero, Leon Golub, and Juergen Teller, just to name a few. They will also be showing a special five-minute performance on Sunday called Art by Telephone, which is loosely based on a Walter de Maria piece made in 1967.
And finally, you can’t visit Vienna and not go to the Museumsquartier. The much-anticipated show “Where I Want to Go,” is Tracey Emin’s first comprehensive exhibition in the city, and features her works, as well as works by Austrian painter Egon Scheile. The show explores and celebrates Emin’s influence on the late artist.
If you’ve made it this far, you owe yourself a Apfelstrudel before facing the crowds in Basel.
