25 Ways to Change the Art World (For the Better)

It's time to stand up for what's right.

1. Cancel Art Basel in Miami Beach—it is has become a degrading event for art and artists. Stop the madness!

2. Move museum ticketing online—no more crazy crowds at entrances. Is this really so hard?

3. Museums should devote more solo shows to female artists.

4. Buyouts should be given to most major metropolitan newspaper art critics who just don’t get today’s art.

5. Move ArtPrize from Grand Rapids to New York where artists actually live and work.

6. Put a cap on the number of galleries any one dealer can have—right now the worlds 12 biggest dealers have 49 galleries worldwide, combined.

7. Allow Jerry Saltz back on Facebook.

8. Stop Jerry Saltz from using Instagram—way too much genitalia.

9. No more attempts at staging art fairs in LA—it’s an idea that will never work.

10. Take the Texas art scene more seriously.

11. Take the Canadian art scene less seriously—anything good comes here, eventually.

12. Change the way art schools teach—making art is important, but so is making a living.

13. Increase the frequency of MoMA PS1‘s “Greater New York“—there’s too much New York to have to wait five years.

14. Patrons should support international biennials that promote new talent rather than hobnobbing at art fairs.

15. Ban chandelier bidding at auction—it’s about time.

16. Give Theaster Gates a MoMA retrospective.

17. Massively increase National Endowment for the Arts funding for artists (to pre-1995 levels?)

18. New York City should strictly enforce Artist-In-Residence certifications on building in areas where artists live.

19. Have artists sign contracts with dealers for a set period of time to stop poaching and help smaller dealers survive.

20. Remove the seller’s premium and listing fees at auctions houses.

21. Improve the quality of wine served at openings—no more “Two Buck Chuck.”

22. Public bathrooms in Chelsea.

23. More elevators for the High Line.

25. Ditch the Euro. The dollar is just a little bit more, and we buy all the art anyway.
