1. Talk: Cao Fei at Pratt Fine Arts Visiting Artist Lecture Series
Beijing-based artist Cao Fei will kick off the 2016-17 Pratt Visiting Artist Lecture Series on Tuesday night, in a special lecture in collaboration with the Department of Digital Arts. Cao has been featured in the Shanghai Biennale, Moscow Biennale, Taipei Biennale, and 50th, 52nd, and 56th Venice Biennales, and recently had first retrospective  at MoMA PS1.

2. Screening: Willie Varela, Re-visions: American Experimental Film, 1975-90 at Anthology Film Archives
For the past four decades, Chicano filmmaker and photographer Willie Varela has explored the pressure points within American culture, from the beginnings of the AIDS crisis, to immigration issues via lingering footage of the Texas-Mexico border. His work appeared at the Museum of Modern Art’s Cineprobe series in 1988, and in two Whitney Biennals (1993 and 1995). See his early Super 8mm work this week at Anthology in this two-part program.

3. First Thursday Gallery Walk, Hosted by Art in DUMBO
AICAD/New York Studio Residency Program will present an exhibit of selected works from its participating artists. Also, “Light Year,” a video art programming series in DUMBO, is screening Earth Revisited, a projected video artwork at the Pearl Street Triangle. And Sophie Iremonger: Baroque Masters on Cardboard is on view at Museum Quality (59 Pearl Street).

4. “Black Women Artists for Black Lives Matter” at the New Museum
This Thursday, artist Simone Leigh will gather over one hundred black female artists at the New Museum for an evening of programming that supports the Black Lives Matter Movement. Leigh, whose exhibition at the museum runs through September 18, has held a number of events in recent weeks for the cause. Ariel Jackson, a participating artist in Thursday’s event, told artnet News that Black Women Artists for Black Lives Matter will “take over the New Museum to rejoice and protest the lives lived and lost.” Bring a camera—this is one for the books.

5. Performance: Exo-Tech: Industrial Exotique at Pioneer Works
Special guests including Sean Ono Lennon, the Arcade Fire’s Sarah Neufeld, and Chairlift’s Caroline Polachek will join supergroup/collective Exo-Tech, which features Cibo Matto’s Yuka Honda, the Red Hot Chili Peppers’s Mauro Refosco, and many other music veterans. The founders, Sophia Brous and Kimbra, will also make the scene.
