Last night, Storm King Art Center held a kickoff cocktail party sponsored by Dom Perignon as a lead up to its upcoming fifth annual Gala Dinner and Live Auction, which will be held on October 8 at the Four Seasons. This year’s gala will honor Alexander S.C Rower and the Calder Foundation, so the cocktail celebration was fittingly held at the Calder Foundation’s art-filled headquarters in Chelsea.

As Calder’s grandson, Rower established the foundation in 1987 in order to promote the artist’s legacy. Calder’s sculptures have inspired and intrigued Storm King visitors for decades and have played an integral role in the expansion of Storm King’s curatorial program.

Last night’s attendees included Storm King president John Stern, director and curator David Collens, Fairfax Dorn, Rainer Judd, Holton Rower, Marc Glimcher, and of course, the honoree himself. This is just a taste of some of the names that will be on the guest list for the festivities on October 8, which will include cocktails, dinner, and a live auction of works by Calder, Dan Budnik, George Rickey, Holton Rower, Richard Serra, and Zhang Huan—the latter of whom is the subject of a blockbuster show at Storm King through November (see “Zhang Huan’s Sculptures at Storm King Dance Upon the Grass“).
