The art world’s most-Instagrammed exhibitions has been well documented at this point, but truly, nothing says “photo opportunity” like large-scale public art.
Summer in New York obviously provides a wealth of options, from Seward Johnson’s kitschy photo-realistic sculptures in Times Square, to Thomas Houseago’s masks, to a giant, wooden disembodied Goliath head in Tribeca Park. Unsurprisingly, Instagram users have more than risen to the challenge, serving up photo after photo of public art goodness.
We’ve scoured Instagram for our favorite summer-time shots from New York and beyond (photos with Lenin monuments not included). If the summer heat is keeping you indoors, you can enjoy the best of the public art scene from the comfort of your own home—but be warned, you just might be tempted to strike out in search of the perfect art selfie to call your own.
Just be careful to play nice with the art, don’t break anything, and pay attention to where you’re swinging that selfie stick.
