Art Miami, America’s most visited art fair, is now in full swing with a dizzying array of over 170 international galleries offering works by over 800 artists.
The fair kicked off with an invitation-only Platinum VIP Preview on December 3 and continues through December 8 at Miami’s One Herald Plaza overlooking Biscayne Bay. Also making waves is sister fair Context Art Miami, dedicated to showcasing emerging and mid-career talent. The fairs are held in tandem at One Herald Plaza.
Art Miami highlights include Ben Miller’s “Endangered River Project,” a series of paintings depicting waterways created entirely with a fly rod. Represented by Gary Snyder Fine Art Montana, Miller has also created a site-based diptych inspired by Miami’s Little River, a site threatened by environmental pressures.
Frankfurt’s Galerie Raphael has unveiled a lively new screen print by Alex Katz, published in a limited edition by Lococo Fine Art. The artist, age 97, was awarded a National Medal of Arts in a White House ceremony this October.
Buckner Projects, based in Southampton, New York, is showing iconic images by Pop pioneer Roy Lichtenstein alongside radiant large-scale paintings by Ndebele artist Esther Mahlangu.
Tokyo’s Gallery UG, a new addition to the fair’s roster, is sharing Kunihiko Nohara’s humorously existential wood carvings and Nami Okada’s emotive landscapes.
And at Priveekollektie Contemporary Art | Design, based in Heusden, Netherlands, the gallery is exhibiting several intriguing pieces of collectible design, like a table and desk lamp from Reinier Bosch’s “Melting” series.
At Context Art Miami, the special exhibition “Visions 2024” highlights the transformative fusion of art and technology, exemplified by Tiffany Trenda’s unsettling exploration of how AI perceives the human body.
Solo shows at Context Art Miami include Minos Azahares’s “Los hechos del silencio (The facts of silence),” presented by 10k Contemporary of El Alto, Bolivia. Born in Guantánamo, Cuba, and based in Miami, Azahares’s densely populated compositions represent a powerful manifestation of artistic resistance in an adverse political context.
Augmenting the art on offer, Context Talks are generating fresh perspectives on salient trends in the art world, such as “The Art Market and the Struggle for Power between Artistic Agents.”
“Art Miami has always been a vibrant platform for artistic expression,” says Nick Korniloff, Executive Vice President and Director of Art Miami Fairs. “I’m more excited than ever to see how our galleries, artists, and collectors engage with the diverse creative talents that make this event truly special.”
Art Miami and Context Art Miami runs through December 8, 2024. Tickets are available here.
