People love celebrity spoofs, especially when it comes to world leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. and Mahatma Gandhi. Cue Amit Shimoni, a graphic designer/illustrator who has enlisted historic figures for “hipstory,” in which he reimagines the likes of John F. Kennedy and Abraham Lincoln as modern-day organic food-loving, barista-friending Brooklynites.

Take a gander at his website and you’ll find Russian revolutionary Vladimir Lenin sporting ear gauges and a shredded black denim studded vest over a grapefruit-pink v-neck tee. Chairman Mao looks fresh, wearing a varsity jacket and backwards cap in a very au courant Hawaiian print—a look that seems to be trending on every corner of Bushwick. Even homegirl Margaret Thatcher gets a cameo. What’s under that white tank top? Just a lime-green leopard-print bustier!

Shimoni offers his “hipstory” portraits for iPhone cases, laptop covers, and greeting cards, as well as on canvas. Perfect for starting conversations next time you’re getting your chai latte at Gimme! Coffee.
