Ah, another spring, another Art Basel. The blockbuster fair returns this year with 291 of the world’s leading galleries gathered in one marvelous four-day onslaught of art. There’s plenty to see! artnet News Editor-in-Chief Andrew Goldstein has rounded up 10 of the best artworks on display at the main fair, while Art Business Reporter Tim Schneider focused on five show-stopping installations in the special Art Basel Unlimited section. But if you’re looking to get out of the booths and onto the streets, you’ve come to the right place: Here are our current picks for unmissable gallery shows in Basel, Zurich, and its environs.

Start with the expertly curated “The Art of Play” at Galerie von Vertes. This group exhibition focuses on a broad range of artists at their most experimental and joyful, and includes great pieces from the likes of Alexander Calder and George Condo.  Then, you’ll likely want to check out the Doug Aitken solo presentation at Galerie Eva Presenhuber. The artist has brought his latest video work to Zurich along with two new large-scale installations. One of which, 3 Modern Figures (don’t forget to breath), features three life-sized and translucent figures, each filled with pulsating, choreographed light. Another landmark show is the 10-year anniversary celebration of Laleh June Gallerie, which gathers works by artists who have been with the gallery since its inception, including Sylvie Fleury, Firooz Zahedi, Julio Villani, and more.
