CB HOYO
“Keeping It Real”
Imitate Modern, London
What the Gallery Says: “CB Hoyo creates work that playfully questions artistic authenticity and monetary value in an era defined by fake news and social media. ‘Keeping It Real,’ opening on 8 February, will present around 20 ‘new fakes’ by the artist, inspired by the work of artists including Cy Twombly, Rene Magritte, Andy Warhol, Takashi Murakami, Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso.”
Why It’s Worth a Look: This is your chance to see an all-new body of work from the 22-year-old artist who paints skilled copies of famous works before defacing them with his tongue-in-cheek commentary. Hoyo has a growing collector base—his work is currently collected by the singer Dua Lipa—and following who appreciate both his raw artistic talent (who else can mimic all the greats so successfully?) and his witty commentary on the art market, forgery, and fake news. With sardonic slogans such as “The Richer I Am The Less People Will Question My Fake Rothko,” and “This Basquiat is Fake but it Still Gets me Laid,” CB Hoyo’s work is sure to amuse.
What It Looks Like:
