For just £20 ($25), you could have the opportunity to stay overnight in a home designed by Scottish architect and artist Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868–1928), reports the Scotsman.
The building, located in Glasgow’s Bellahouston Park, is called the House of an Art Lover, and was constructed between 1989 and 1996 based on designs Mackintosh and his wife, Margaret MacDonald, drew up in 1901. Since its completion, the building has become a popular Scottish tourist attraction.
“Originally designed as a theoretical build for an architectural design competition, the space is probably the most significant representation of Mackintosh’s style,” House for an Art Lover CEO Gary Sanderson told the Scotsman. “Incorporating a unique blend of Art Noveau, Scottish Baronial and Japanese influences alongside Mackintosh’s own distinct architectural vocabulary, House for an Art Lover is arguably one of the most visionary buildings in the world today.”
Now that the space, which is used to host art exhibitions and other events, is celebrating its 20th birthday, visitors can enter to win a rare overnight stay. The winner, who can bring a friend, will be the guest of honor at a party on November 10 marking the milestone anniversary and honoring Mackintosh’s life and work. After the festivities, they will spend the night on the property.
The contest is open until November 7, and is being run through Airbnb. To enter, rather than requesting to book the property, interested parties are instructed to contact the host with a short pitch explaining why you want to stay at the House for an Art Lover.
While it’s unclear what criteria will be used to chose a winner, the price is certainly more affordable than other artsy overnight stays featured in recent news. The winning bid for a night at the Edward Hopper House Art Center, where Edward Hopper grew up, for instance, was $1,100.
