We have officially entered Aquarius season, the eleventh and penultimate house in the zodiac calendar. Aquarius is represented by the cosmic water bearer, typically embodied by a man pouring water from a jug or simply a glyph of waves. An air sign, Aquarius is ruled by Uranus, whose planetary energy promotes unconventional, offbeat thinking. Those born under this sign (January 20–February 18) are known to be independent, open-minded, and progressive thinkers.
As collectors and as artists, Aquarians are unconventional, fomenting trends and styles that may not be embraced for years by the rest of the world. Highly independent and accepting of themselves, they are unlikely to be swayed from their internal compass. Some famous artists born under this sign include Takashi Murakami, Yoko Ono, Jeff Koons, and Édouard Manet.
Below, we’ve chosen our favorite artworks from the Artnet Gallery Network that capture the Aquarius spirit.
