Glasgow Degree Show Goes on Despite Fire

A mere three weeks after a devastating fire in the Mackintosh Building at the Glasgow School of Art, the school is staging its 2014 degree show, the BBC reports. The exhibition showcases more than 500 students’ work, but does not include all of the fine arts students. The exhibited art is also being compiled into a book that they are selling to raise money for those students that lost work or whose work was damaged in the fire.

The exhibition also features work by graduating students in the School of Design and the Mackintosh School of Architecture, and opens to the public on Saturday. The new Reid Building is hosting the Architecture and Design show, while the city’s Glue Factory will be housing the Master of Fine Art show. The fine art students were the most affected by the fire, and are each contributing to a special exhibition of digital prints hosted by the McLellan Galleries.

The Glasgow School of Art director, Professor Tom Inns, told BBC: “It has been a particularly challenging time for our fine art students and this exhibition ensures that although they are unable to stage a degree show at this time, they are able to join with their fellow students across the campus in our annual showcase of creativity and innovation.” The firefighters were able to save 90 percent of the structure of the Mackintosh building and around 70 percent of its contents.
