Though the theme of the night was “Red and Racy,” there was also the requisite amount of New York art world black worn at the New Museum‘s spring gala. Come on, what else did you expect? Held at Cipriani’s Wall Street location, guests arrived to find two Ferraris parked outside—the Italian sportscar-maker was the event’s lead sponsor. Honoree Annabelle Selldorf announced during her speech that, “I got picked up in a Ferrari today, and it rocked my world.” The room managed to laugh through their jealousy.
Despite the fact that hors d’oeuvres included Cipriani’s legendary lamb chops, several female guests said they had to restrain their appetites for fear of ruining their thematically-appropriate red lips. We totally understand—it’s hard to stay ladylike when eating meat off the bone. After cocktails, guests were seated for dinner and Simon de Pury took the stage to auction off works by Alex Katz and Takashi Murakami, which quickly sold for $170k and $350k, respectively.
We spotted supermodel Karlie Kloss goofing around with Derek Blasberg, and actress Greta Gerwig posing for a sea of photographers in a killer crimson jumpsuit. But attendees seemed most smitten with Lynda Benglis, the evening’s artist honoree.
