Atop a newly designed Renzo Piano building in lower Manhattan earlier this month, art lovers gathered to celebrate artnet and Maestro Dobel Tequila’s first-ever artist collaboration with East London-based sculptor Julian Mayor.
Best known for his computer-planned, hand-constructed chairs, crafted from industrial materials such as mirrored glass and steel, Mayor, whose work sits at the nexus of art and design, welcomed attendees at a party replete with with rounds of Maestro Dobel tequila cocktails and passed appetizers.
Placed around the space, and inside the connecting, two-story apartment, were several of the artist’s most well-known sculptural pieces, installed for a one-night only exhibition. Against the New York evening sky, the prismatic, mirrored chairs blended into the setting, reflecting the surrounding cityscape and the electric blue of the terrace’s plunge pool.
During his speech, Mayor thanked artnet and Maestro Dobel for their support and partnership, which will culminate in an exhibition of new work inspired by Maestro Dobel at Art Basel Miami Beach in December. Maestro Dobel, like Mayor, uses traditional craftsmanship and cutting-edge technology to create the world’s first aged crystalino, a uniquely modern expression of tequila.
“I’m really excited about this fantastic opportunity,” Mayor said during a speech toward the end of the evening. “And I’m really looking forward to everyone seeing the results in December.”
