Kara Walker Directs Shadow Puppet Music Video for Santigold

In yet another occurrence of art and music colliding this week, artist Kara Walker and photographer Ari Marcopoulos have created a new music video for “Banshee,” a track off of Santigold’s 99¢ album released earlier this year.

The meeting of the minds happened at Gucci’s fall/winter show in February. Santigold told the New York Times that she and her husband, Trevor Andrew, took their seats beside the artists in the front row. “It was the perfect double date,” she said. “We hung out all night, and at the end of the evening, they said, ‘Let’s do a video together! We have an idea!'”

Set to an electronically-manipulated pop sound that’s characteristic of Santigold’s recent work, the video stars the musician, with the occasional clip of Walker, playing with shadow puppets crafted to resemble them. “I pulled out all the low-tech tools I have in the studio, spotlights, and overhead projectors,” Walker explained in the interview.

Walker joins a long list of visual artists who have recently teamed up with musicians. Last year, photographer Petra Collins was credited for taking the helm on Carlie Rae Jepsen’s music video for “Boy Problems,” Marina Abramović famously collaborated with Jay Z on 2013’s “Picasso Baby,” and Wolfgang Tillmans recently released a song on Frank Ocean’s latest album, Blond.
